Denpasar Airport has got to be, no doubt, the site of the biggest and most memorable tantrum of my lifetime, exactly because of the flight shuffling, erratic monitors, and lack of benches. (Quote: “This flight does not exist!”) But I still think that it’s a tad cleaner than other Indonesian airports.
I agree: do stock up on water and snacks, prepare to walk around, and park yourself next to the nearest flight monitor anyway.
While DPS can be a mess (and geographically the shoot for Savages happened next door in Nusa Tenggara) I still have a feeling that Taylor Kitsch’s bad airport experience actually happened in Jakarta.
Some years ago, a fellow Filipino I met on a seminar and I decided to do some shopping during our 10-hr lay-over in SG from India. At 4:10pm we were two MRT stops away from the airport when I decided to check my boarding pass:
“Doc, ang 5:05pm ba sa military time ay 16:05?”
“Hindi 17:05 dapat”
“OMG BOARDING NA YUNG FLIGHT NATIN!”
*cue last team to arrive Amazing Race background music*
Upon arrival, we heard our names being called. The flight status board told us that we were to board at the furthest possible gate from where we were.
“Mauna ka na, hindi ko kayang tumakbo, kakapanganak ko lang”
“Ha eh pano kayo doc?”
“Harangan mo yung eroplano!!!”
And with that began the longest run of my life. I was so panicky that at one point I was running on a walkalator going in the opposite direction. Upon arriving at the gate:
“Wag po kayong umalis may kasama pa ko!!!”
“Sir hindi namin kayo iiwanan wag kayo mag-alala”
“Ay Pilipino din kayo?”
“Lahat kami sir! Mukhang pawis na pawis kayo a”
My companion arrived a minute later. She rode on one of those cargo vehicles running inside Changi airport. All that running for nothing :/
Have I learned my lesson? No. I’m still the idiot who’s almost always the last to board the plane for stupid reasons (choosing to dine in the slowest restaurant, leaving behind and going back for my credit card while last minute souvenir shopping…)
